Job Description

The Chemicals Specialist works to support the delivery of Assent’s value proposition and business goals. This role applies chemical expertise and analytical rigor to evaluate and structure complex substance information, working collaboratively with the team’s subject matter experts and cross-functional stakeholders to uphold the quality and integrity of chemical data within Assent’s solutions.

Key Requirements & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the assessment, validation, and structuring of large chemical datasets to support Assent’s SaaS platform. Applies deep chemical expertise to analyze substance lists, assess hazard classifications, map substances across regulatory frameworks, and ensure data integrity.

  • Conducts comprehensive research, leveraging a variety of tools and resources, on an ongoing basis to analyze and assess large data sets of chemicals;

  • Reviews and optimizes process workflows by engaging with stakeholders within and outside of the Regulatory & Sustainability Experts team to ensure cohesion between our product’s behavior, regulatory policies, and our customer’s program needs;

  • Contributes subject-matter expertise to internal teams & customers when chemical dataset insights are required;

  • Manages the development and ongoing updates of reporting templates for the integration of supply chain regulatory and sustainability data into enterprise reports;

  • Monitors global chemical trends and upcoming laws to act as an early warning system for internal and external stakeholders. You will identify substances that may be restricted in the future and create clear guidance regarding safer materials before new regulations take effect;

  • Participates in industry engagements and conferences as needed;

  • Provides updates to internal tools when risk evaluation of chemicals is applicable to support supply chain investigations;

  • Familiar with corporate security policies and follows the guidance set out by processes and procedures of Assent Inc.

Qualifications

We strongly value your talent, energy and passion. It will also be valuable to Assent if you have the following qualifications,

  • 5+ years of practical experience in chemistry or chemical regulatory compliance, application of chemical principles to materials/substances compliance, product stewardship, sustainability, or design for compliance. Experience assessing chemical composition, hazard classification, and substance restrictions (e.g., REACH, RoHS, TSCA) for complex manufactured products is strongly preferred.

  • Relevant post-secondary degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Toxicology, or similar relevant field;

  • Exacting rigor in data validation and cross-referencing of large datasets; capable of identifying nuances between CAS numbers, EC numbers, and regulatory synonyms

  • Experience in chemical data management and hierarchical list building; ability to structure chemical data for seamless integration into supply chain compliance software and digital material passports

  • Expertise in the chemical composition of industrial materials (polymers, alloys, coatings, and adhesives); ability to bridge the gap between complex material trade names and their constituent chemical substances to ensure accurate disclosure

  • Knowledge of product regulations, standards and legislative frameworks is an asset

  • Strong research and analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to devise solutions based on limited information;

  • Superb collaboration and influencing skills - able to establish strong cross-functional relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders both internal and external, inspiring trust;

  • Highly motivated self-starter with proven ability to manage projects, meet deadlines, and drive results. Demonstrated ability to work independently, with work reviewed at critical points;

  • Effective time management and organizational skills, effectively aligning commitments to priorities;

  • Growth mindset, with innate curiosity and pragmatic optimism that supports ongoing learning and continuous improvement.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be flexible with hours to support teams in multiple geographies.

  • This position may require occasional travel for team and industry events, conferences, and customers.
