Summary
We are seeking an experienced Hardware Engineer with a strong focus on printed circuit board (PCB) design and sustaining engineering. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and reviewing new PCBs as well as maintaining and improving existing hardware products. You’ll troubleshoot issues on current products, implement updates, and work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our hardware remains reliable and up-to-date. This is a great opportunity to take ownership of both new design projects and the ongoing success of mature products.
What you do
- Design, review, and layout printed circuit boards (PCBs) for new products, and update existing PCB designs as needed to improve performance or address component changes. Ensure that PCB designs meet quality, reliability, and safety requirements through thorough analysis and testing.
- Provide engineering support for existing hardware products, including troubleshooting hardware issues, performing root cause analysis, and implementing design or component changes to enhance product reliability and extend product life. This includes proactively managing component end-of-life replacements and minor redesigns to prevent production or field issues.
- Work closely with a cross-functional team – including software engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing engineers – to ensure seamless integration of hardware designs into the overall product. Collaborate during development to address any electrical-mechanical or hardware-software interface issues, and support manufacturing and test departments in troubleshooting production challenges.
- Create and maintain clear documentation for hardware designs and changes, such as schematics, bills of materials (BOM), and design modification notes. Ensure all designs and changes comply with relevant regulatory standards and certification requirements (e.g., UL, CE), updating documentation and drawings whenever modifications are made. Maintain thorough revision control and change logs to support quality and regulatory audits.
- Participate actively in hardware design reviews and design-for-manufacturability discussions to gather feedback and improve designs. Oversee or contribute to hardware testing and validation efforts – from bench testing of prototypes to overseeing environmental and EMC compliance tests – to verify that hardware meets specifications and reliability targets. Identify any issues during testing and drive the necessary fixes or improvements before production.
What you need
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A strong fundamental understanding of electrical engineering principles is required.
- Hands-on experience with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, Eagle, or similar software, including schematic capture and PCB layout. You should be able to design multi-layer boards and understand best practices for component placement, routing, and PCB manufacturing constraints.
- Solid understanding of electronics manufacturing processes and hardware testing/validation methods. For example, familiarity with PCB fabrication and assembly processes, and the ability to work with manufacturing engineers to ensure designs can be produced and tested efficiently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to debug complex hardware issues. You should be comfortable using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers) to diagnose problems and verify fixes. An ability to systematically troubleshoot and resolve hardware failures is crucial.
- Excellent ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills are important to collaborate with colleagues across different disciplines and to clearly document and explain your design decisions. You should be self-motivated but also open to feedback and able to integrate input from design reviews or cross-functional discussions.
